Naxos American Classics' Alan Hovhaness: Symphony No. 60 seems designed to highlight works of Hovhaness that have a universal appeal and therefore to broaden his fan base - while he is among the most performed of twentieth century American composers, such efforts are worthwhile and certainly cannot hurt his reputation. The opening piece on this disc, 1944's Khrimian Hairig, Op. 49, is remembered by Hovhaness' last wife, Hinako Fujihara, as his true masterpiece. Gerard Schwarz conducts the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra with precision and clarity. The soloists Lars Ranch and David Leisner give nice performances of both trumpet and guitar. The Berlin Radio, while not what you would expect for Hovhaness's music, sound first-rate. Finally, sound quality from Naxos is quite an accomplishment, considering the budget price for this CD. Hovhaness has found a strong advocate in Gerard Schwarz, and about time too. This prolific and at times prolix composers music, with its expressively limited mixture of bell sounds, modal and Eastern harmonies, and simple counterpoint, can sound naïve and even irritating in large doses. Berlin Radio Symphony. Naxos - . The Guitar Concerto must be numbered among the more successful works in its genre. The same holds true for Symphony No. At a bit more than half an hour, this is a long work for Hovhaness, but the inclusion of some American folk music makes an interesting contrast with his usual Eastern modes, while the four movements once again offer an unusually broad range of contrast and sonority. Best of all, the entire program is extremely well played, from guitarist David Leisner on up. 49 by Alan Hovhaness Performer: Lars Ranch Trumpet Conductor: Gerard Schwarz OrchestraEnsemble: Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra Period: 20th Century Written: 1944 USA
