String Quartet No. 3 by Béla Bartók was written in September 1927 in Budapest. It is one of six string quartets by Bartók. The work is in one continuous stretch with no breaks, but is divided in the score into four parts: Prima parte: Moderato. Seconda parte: Allegro. Recapitulazione della prima parte: Moderato. Coda: Allegro molto. Despite Bartók calling the third section a recapitulation it is not a straight repetition of the music from the prima parte, being somewhat varied and simplified. This Keller Quartet cycle of Bartok's string quartets, recorded in 1993-94, is not as well known, and that is a shame. The Takacs Quartet cycle is deservedly considered the definitive recording of Bartok's string quartets, the great cycle of the early 20th century. They play in the gypsy style of the Vegh Quartet, rough, earthy, and fiery by turns. But the Keller Quartet also does justice to Bartok in this tradition, if with slightly less awesome majesty than their fellow Hungarians. If the Takacs cycle did not exist, surely this one would be more widely acclaimed. The 3rd, 4th and 5th quartets are sheer modernist genius.
