A veteran of Mark Whitecage's ensembles as well as a frequent collaborator of McPhee's, bassist Dominic Duval plays rough, his hands exploding with fat, rapid-fire plucking or smeared arco. Shipp and Duvall spar over spiky soundscapes on Never Before. In Finland disguises a series of changes based on Gershwin's Summertime. Shipp and Duvall's pounding accompaniment to McPhee's fluttering sax indicate that the living's not easy at all. After traveling a wide world of variation, the piece ends with McPhee adding quotes from Albert Ayler. In February 2011, Shipp released a double-disc album entitled Art of the Improviser. This release is testament to Shipp's achievements, yet it is also a continuation of the discovery in his developmental musical language. The Chicago Tribune called the project monumental and galvanic as ever. In Finland. Cadence Jazz. Trio with Joe McPhee soprano sax, trumpet, Dominic Duval bass. Considering the dozens, perhaps hundreds, of albums in which Joe McPhee, Matthew Shipp, and Dominic Duval have each participated, you might think that at some point they might start repeating themselves - and, perhaps someday they will. But, on this special album, they perform tenaciously as a unit, spouting a seemingly endless flow of ideas, an unstoppable volcanic eruption. Лента с персональными рекомендациями и музыкальными новинками, радио, подборки на любой вкус, удобное управление своей коллекцией. Joe McPhee soprano sax, pocket trumpet and Dominic Duval bass have played together before, but other than the latters guest appearance in the David S. Ware Quartet, neither had played with Matthew Shipp piano. Yet early on, they gel in the 32-minute Never Before, with McPhees fleet sax runs complementing Shipps thundering low-end stabs and Duvals rapid plucking. 20 minutes in, McPhee introduces Valentine, which gets deconstructed by his comrades. This is a new, unopened CD in its original packaging
