Boogie Woogie Maxixe. Maxine Sullivan. Released: Apr 2009. Label: Master Classics Records. Piper In The Glen. Blue Skies. Annie Laurie. Boogie Woogie is a compilation album containing four 10-inch, 78 rpm records of Boogie-woogie music. The songs on the album were recorded over a period of three years from 1936 to 1939, then released in 1941 on this compilation album by Columbia Records C44. Artists featured on the album include Harry James, Count Basie, Big Joe Turner, and the three prominent boogie-woogie pianists of the time, Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, and Meade Lux Lewis. Sullivan initially became famous for her recording of Loch Lomond in the late 1930s, but she could do more than sing folk songs. She was a superior interpreter of lyrics, lightly swinging material while usually sticking closely to the words and the melody. This CD is full of former rarities, featuring Sullivan in several settings, including one with clarinetist Vic Ash's quartet in England a trio with pianist Dick Hyman who is also heard on organ and harpsichord, and a reunion with trumpeter Charlie Shavers and clarinetist Buster Bailey.
